It was sometime back that webmasters found out that Google considers back links to a webpage as well while determining its page rank or its relative relevance amongst other sites in the cyberspace. What followed was a mad rush to accumulate as much as back links as possible, and in no time, every other website was pointing to a hundred other websites and vice versa, no matter whether they were relevant links to their niches or not. When Google found it out, they out rightly banned such spamming, sending many such sites straight into the trash can without notice. Well, that is a classical case of overdoing things.
The fact is that Google indeed considers back links to a website - alongside many other aspects - while determining its page rank, and still it does so. But those back links has to be from web pages relevant to the website’s niche, and preferably from top ranked ones. This article tries to educate the reader on how Google judges the quality of back links.
Google bots regularly check the link quality of back links emanating to and from a given website. In other words, Google does not look for link quantity alone. Even after ranking a website, Google periodically verifies if the back links continue to come from those websites indeed - or whether they have became parking domains - or whether the contents of the other site(s) has become something that is now irrelevant to the website’s niche.
In fact, quality assessment performed by Google is not limited to these factors alone, but also includes link age, domain history, link location, link neighborhood quality, likelihood of the link being a paid ad etc. In short, Google judges the quality of your links based on an array of factors, some of which, yes, a site owner may not be able to control fully. But, there are aspects that can be controlled by webmasters, which eventually makes or breaks the prospects of a portal on the PR scale.
For example, webmasters or website owners can periodically check and see if there are any dead links pointing to their sites. There are tools available to speed up this process. It is also a good idea to sign up for an account on Google Webmaster Tools. After validating the site, Google will start providing regular reports on dead links on the site. However, Google Webmaster Tools has the limitation that it tells only about dead links on a given site, and not about external links. Using a link checking tool is also a good option.
To sum it up, good link quality helps both the websites and its users. It also aids Google - and other search engines as well - to swift through the site with ease. Hope the above mentioned points helps users to perform link building in a way Google likes it.

People always ask me how the syndication of press releases and book-marking your blog in many of the social book-marking sites can possibly generate traffic for your site. The other day I submitted a press release to thousands of online sources for a client. As part of my regular routine, I then put the release up on their web site. Not 20 minutes later they had a new comment on that press release:
“I found your site on Technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. I’m looking forward to reading more from you.” So do these strategies work? You bet they do! Below are a few link-building strategies for you to use in your own business to help generate traffic for your site.
1. Social Book-Marking Sites
Social Media book-marking is the strategy used in the story above. It’s also usually the quickest way to get your content read. Use social book-marking sites like Digg, Delicious, Reddit and Technorati to bookmark your own blogs. Make sure to write an attention grabbing headline and use appropriate keywords so that people searching for your particular topic and/ or product will be able to find you. As the story above shows, this is a simple way to create a loyal fan base.
2. Comment on Other Blogs in Your Industry
Find relevant successful blogs in your particular niche that you can comment on. If you find a blog that already has a loyal fan base, become a part of their community and you can tap into that fan base. Start leaving comments on the blogs with a link back to your web site (or blog). Engaging with these relevant blogs is a great way to get noticed. It can also lead to valuable links back to your site. Just like with any other conversation, join in and share your opinion; however, make sure you present both you and your company in the best light possible by leaving relevant comments that will actually help others in your niche.
3. Article Syndication Sites
Start writing relevant articles about your niche and syndicate them. There a ton of these article syndication sites out there, some that we use and suggest are ezinearticles.com, articlemarketer.com, submityourarticle.com, and articlebase.com.
Each of these sites allow you to have a byline at the bottom of your article so if someone reads your article and likes what they see they can visit your site for more information.
Submitting your article to these types of sites does several things. One benefit is that it allows you to get your information out there (through RSS feeds) on thousands of web sites and can lead to your content being referenced in other posts and articles. Also, make sure to always include your web address in your author byline because each time your article is picked up on a site, it provides a link back to your site, thus generating highly targeted traffic to your web site and also raising your search engine rankings through your increased number of link-backs.
Another simple hint: In your byline give the reader a reason to visit your web site. For example, “Want to find more insider secrets to successfully grow your business and increase profits? Check out www.yourwebsitehere.com for a free copy of Top 10 secrets to gaining ridiculous income in 6 months.” (Not to mention if they go and sign-up, then they’re on your mailing list!)
Conclusion:
Remember, if you don’t take the time to tell people about you and your business then no one will ever know what they’re missing!

With the network of websites that I run for real estate investors, I have been focusing quite a bit of time, money and resources on building incoming links to these sites from websites that have relevant, related content. When I have thousands of other things that I could be doing, why would I bother?
Well, there is the obvious reason: links coming to your site means that, at times, people can find those links when they are visiting these other websites and, because it is a related type of website, they may find it interesting and click on it. That means direct traffic to my site. With a hugely popular site, that might mean a small stream of traffic coming to my website regularly and that’s awesome.
However, that is not the only reason why I am so focused on building links coming to my websites. Another reason is that links coming to your site are votes, from the Internet community, that you site is worth visiting and that means a lot to search engines and specifically Google when they determine how popular your website is and ultimately if, and where, it should show your website when someone searches their database.
The idea, overly simplified for obvious reasons here, is that if 100 people found your website interesting enough that they linked to it, then other people might also find it interesting and would want to see it. Another way of saying that is that a link is a vote for your website and search engines tend to say, the more people that vote for a website, the more likely others would enjoy it too.
So, I have been and will continue to work diligently on finding other related sites that would benefit from linking to my site and encourage them to do so. In fact, that is what many of the marketing tests that I currently have running on Ruthless Accountability are doing.

In recent times search engines have begun to look at not only your websites content but also the number of outside websites which link back to your website. Link popularity measures the quality and quantity of other web sites that link to specific sites on the Internet. Link popularity is another way of getting your website higher up the search engines. The way in which link popularity works is that search engines think if people are linking to your site that your website must be good and because of this it deserves a boost in rankings and if you think about it this does make sense as no one would want to link to your site if they thought your site wasn’t up to scratch.
It has been said that there is no need for average websites to obsess over link popularity; however you should make sure that your website is ‘link worthy’ but you should remember that link popularity makes up only a part of the most search engine’s ranking algorithms. It has also been stated that Google places more emphasis on link popularity than most other search engines; however how much they actually boost a sites ranking is debatable and it also depends on lot on the size of the site. One of the best ways to build long term link popularity is to offer good content and features that provide real value to your audience. Link popularity really does make a difference and plays an important role in the visibility of a web site among the top of the search results. It is also important due to the fact that some search engines require at least one or more link coming to a web site otherwise they will drop it from their index.
The philosophy behind the idea of link popularity is that important sites will attract many links and that if a website’s content is poor it will have difficulty attracting any links at all. Search engines such as Google use a special link analysis system to rank web pages based on their link popularity and citations from other website owners help to define a sites reputation.
Link popularity assumes that not all incoming links are equal, as an inbound link from a major directory carries more weight than an inbound link from an obscure personal home page. In other words, the quality of incoming links counts more than sheer numbers of them.
If is safe to say that all of the major search engines place some emphasis on link popularity within their ranking algorithms. Also there seems to be two main types of links that will work best to increase your link popularity; these two main types of links are links that come from other sites that focus on the same keyword phrases that your site focuses on as well as links that come from relevant categories in major directories and industry-specific portals.
It can clearly be stated that link popularity will continue to be an essential factor when it comes to successful search engine marketing initiatives for the foreseeable future. Links are also helpful for search engines when they are trying to get through billions of documents and find ones that are relevant to their users search requests.

The use of back-links to improve a websites Search Engine Rank Position (SERP) in search engines (SE) has been very effective in diffusing some level of black-hat search engine optimization (SEO). Black-hat SEO involves using “illegal” techniques with the express purpose of fooling SEs to rank a website favorably. Back-links on the other hand are hyper-text links from other websites that link and direct their visitors to your website. They are also referred to as incoming links.
An everlasting question on an internet marketers mind is how they could get other websites to link back to their website. The more the number of links, the higher the website’s Page Rank (PR) and most likely the better the SERP. The better the SERP the more visitors the website attracts, and the more the visitors the more sales the site can make.
One such technique is article marketing. It is so called as it uses reprintable articles to market your website. The driving force of the internet as a whole is information often referred to as content. Consequently, SEs love content, more so new, unique and/or frequent content. Article marketing targets to satisfy this insatiable need of SEs and webmasters.
An article is a literary composition on a distinct and independent subject such as the one you are reading. This is as opposed to series, book, or other such literary works. The idea in article marketing is to compose on a subject related to your website. For example for a tours and travel website one could compose an article about giving tips on dealing with jetlag or choosing a family safari. Ideally, the article should be more than 500 words but less than 1500. You then make the article available for reprint by any other webmaster. They can choose to use it on their websites, blogs or publish it on their newsletters.
The trick behind getting a link back to your website from the websites’ whose owners choose to use the article is in the resource box. A resource boxes is a widely acceptable format of including hyper-linked text at the end of your article with a little marketing message. It is usually a sentence or two. In here you should add a link pointing to your website. As reprint content, an interested webmaster is only allowed to use the content as is - they can neither change the content nor the resource box.
Each website that uses your article automatically gives you a back-link. Highly informative content tends to attract wider publishing by other webmasters.
